with scary debt, UNB students are ready for Day of Action

$39,000 is the average debt when a student is graduated from university; with time this debt is increasing as tuition is increasing year by year. Tuition is increasing at a rate more than the inflation rate. Not only students, parents too are under financial pressure due to increased tuition which leads to increasing number of students dropping out the school.

Volunteers reaching out to students and class talk in preparation of day of action

A recent release from Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission (MPHEC) shows that trend of student enrolment is decreasing in University of New Brunswick along with other institutions in Maritime. All the data and stats can be found on http://www.mphec.ca/.

Nov 2nd, National Day of Action was decided during Canadian Federation of Students general meeting in Jun 2016. Students from coast to coast are participating in this student movement in demand of accessible post secondary education for everyone. Graduate Student Association, solely member of CFS from NB will be leading this movement in New Brunswick. Volunteers are geared up here at University of New Brunswick and reaching to students through class talks, social media, personal interactions.

Students are in support of this movement and many of them will be coming out of their labs and class on the day of action. While different provinces have different issues, here in New Brunswick, this day of action will be focused on:

  • Rising tuition fees
  • Reduction in research funding
  • Deregulated international student fees
  • Universal access to healthcare for international students

Students will reach out to provincial legislatures and demand action towards issues students are facing in New Brunswick.  Day of action will start from quad (back of UNB Student Union Building) at 12:00pm on Nov 2nd. Its not only CFS or Graduate Student Association; there are other associations in Fredericton and NB who supported this movement and will be present on the day of action.
